I thought this image was pretty interesting because it displays all the problems that are associated with air pollution. I think it is pretty powerful to see all the words and look at each word indiviually to see exactly how harmful air pollution is and how it effects people the most.

Pie Chart showing what the factors are for the cause of air pollution. I was not surprised by the percent (52%) that was contributed from the industry. Since industry (example from smokestacks) contribute to a large portion of what we breathe in daily, I was kind of surprised that it wasn’t a greater percent. I also thought that the commericial and residential heating had a very low percent of only 1. I would have thought that the percent would have been higher then agriculture.

Michael Braungart and William McDonough came up with the ‘Waste=Food’ concept in the early 90’s, and today it has become the national policy of the Chinese government and many industrial giants have adopted it too, including Ford, Nike and Herman Miller. It involves making the products we use completely safe to man & animals, allowing their components to be 100% re-usable in the biosphere or technosphere, and that they are easily disassembled for re-use. Provisions for how we can harness our power, clean our water and keep our soil pure have also been added. This is a grand design, on a global scale, and what’s fuelling interest from the profit crew is that it may be capable of actually increasing productivity, and profit margins too.

This painting vividly depicts air pollution from the smokestacks in the background. Although it does not have a direct connection to the effects of air pollution, it still shows it at an earlier time period. I think that the focus is on the clouds of smoke against the vibrant background. It leads your eye to the source of it, the smokestacks and then how all that pollution could be contaminating the air and water that is also depicted.

This documentary I thought did a good job at taking an indepth look at the different types of air pollution as well as some of the causes of it. I think this is a good starting documentary to just get an idea about what exactly air pollution is.

“Coal Will Never Be Clean” (2nd Edition)

In this poster the small smoke stack at the top and the skull at the bottom are the only graphics shown. In big capital letters “Coal will never be Clean” is written, taking over the majority of the poster. The colors are black and brown, making it appear dirty (like the poster had been exposed to coal making it appear old and worn out). The lines of the poster are all straight (horizontal) in a line coming down from the top to the bottom. Someone might see this in a promotion for clean air or to control pollution. The effect of this visual might be to promote that coal leads to a good amount of the air pollution that surrounds us and it really should be controlled in some way.

The Print Ad titled KILLED was done by BBDO Guerrero Ortega advertising agency for product: Air Pollution Watch (brand: Abs Cbn Bantay Usok Foundation) in Philippines. It was released in the Dec 2003.

I think this image really hits a strong position that the pollution coming out of the bus’ exhaust is really harmful and can effect one’s health. The font really attracts the viewer to read what it says and the torn look of the image gives the effect something being destroyed.

Reduce Air Pollution

Air pollution comes from many different sources such as factories, power plants, dry cleaners, cars, buses, trucks and even windblown dust and wildfires. Air pollution can threaten the health of human beings, trees, lakes, crops, and animals, as well as damage the ozone layer and buildings. Air pollution also can cause haze, reducing visibility in national parks and wilderness areas.

I feel that this graphic displays a good depiction of the causes of air pollution and the sources that are effected by it. In showing different symbols and colors for the sources, transport, removal and effects, really get to the point of how everything is effected by air pollution

The plant, which operates natural gas and coal-fired units, is one of the largest power plants in the United States. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will begin regulating mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants for the first time, the latest in a string of new regulations that has Republicans bent on reining in the federal body. The new rules will have the greatest impact on Texas, home to more coal-fired power plants than any other state.

Related to Susan Sontag’s On Photography: When Sontag states, “Photographs will offer indisputable evidence that the trip was made, that the program was carried out, that fun was had” (9). This can be related to the photo because the EPA wants the audience to know that they are creating new regulations that will monitor more about the coal coming from the power plants. Also when Sontag says, “The omnipresence of cameras persuasively suggests that time consists if interesting events, events worth photographing” (11). Shows that at any opportunity someone is going to take a photo because it is interesting to them. For the EPA it has to do with anything that that protects/tries to make better the environment.

Caption: Smoke and steam spewing out of smoke stacksI really like this photograph because of the angle it is taken at and also the big clouds of stem coming from the smoke stacks against the clear blue sky. I think it protrays exactly how much pollution can come from these smoke stacks and a lot of it can really effect one’s health. Overall, I think that the purpose of this photograph was to capture the smoke stacks but at a different angle, that creates much more of an impact.
